How much does an average box of cereal weigh?

- January 30, 2021

Weight of Cereal

The average weight of a manufactured box of cereal is around 500 grams or 17.637 ounces, with a margin of error of around 28.3495 grams or 1.0 ounce. Not all cereals are the same size so this is simply the average size of a standard box of cereal.

The weight of the cereal will depend on a couple of factors such as the density of the cereal and the size of the box. Most bands of cereals come in a wide variety of sizes. Much like t-shirt sizes, you can expect sizes ranging from small to large. Unlike clothing sizes, however, you will also see sizes like family and giant as well. That said there is no consistency among cereal manufactures in regards to weight. For example, a family-size box from one manufacturer may weigh 18 oz and 22 oz for another. This is in most part due to the wide-ranging weight of the ingredients used to make the cereal.

However, it's important to remember brands change the weight of the sizes all the time. So a family size of cereal may weigh 21 oz today and 18 oz tomorrow.

To make matters even more confusing sometimes the same brand and size of cereal will weigh differently at one store vs another at the same time!

How many pounds does my Cereal weigh?

(A family size of Cheerios is not always 21 ounces as in the example below. In most cases they are now 18 oz.)

For this example will be using the family size of Cheerios one of my favorites. If you are looking for a different band no worries. Almost all cereals provide the same measurements in a similar fashion so this should work for you. Near the bottom left-hand corner of the box of Cheerios, I found its net weight measurements.  This box of cereal weighs 21 ounces. If you translate that to pounds you will get 1.3125 pounds. If you are looking for grams then the 21 ounces become 595 grams as stated on the box.

How much does the average box of Cereal weigh?

There is no clear answer to this question. The list below will give you a quick overlook of the sizes you may find when shopping for cereals.

 13 oz (370 grams)

 14 oz (396 grams)

 16.2 oz (459 grams)

18 oz (510 grams)

 21oz (595 grams)

As you can see the sizes are all over the place and this is just a small sample. That said the average size should weigh around 500 grams. This is because that is roughly the weight of a medium size box of cereal.

Cheapest Box Of Cereal By Weight?

The easiest way to figure out which box of cereal is the cheapest by weight is to divide the price by the number of ounces in the box. For example today the price for a family-size box of Cheerios is $3.64 at Walmart. Walmarts current family size box also weighs 18 oz

$3.64 ÷ 18 = 0.202

(This means your paying roughly 20 cents per ounce of Cheerios.)

The price for a family-size box of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes is also $3.64 at Walmart. However, this family-size box weighs 24 oz

$3.64 ÷ 24 = 0.151

(This means your paying roughly 15 cents per ounce of Frosted Flakes.)

If you do the math Kellogg's Frosted Flakes is 5 cents cheaper per ounce than Cheerios.
